Equipment such as trucks, backhoes, and riding mowers are capital investments and an important component in cost-effective management. large portion of business profits may be invested or designated toward major equipment purchase. Before a decision is made to acquire new equipment, there must be careful consideration of the allocation of present and future cash assets to cover equipment costs. | DIRT PAIL AUGUST 20, 2011 Equipment Rental and Subcontracting It may not be worth purchasing machines that a business uses only occasionally. In this situation, the options are equipment rental or subcontracting the work. Either way, any work that requires use of that machine (possibly on more than one job) should be coordinated so it can be accomplished at the same time. Rental rates from contractors may be substantially lower than those of equipment dealers, depending on economic conditions. Contractor rentals can include the skilled operator of the machine and its transportation. | DIRT PAIL AUGUST 17, 2011 Equipment Purchase and Leasing Before you purchase any major unit of equipment, you will probably want to determine whether it is more cost efficient than continuing to get by with old equipment. To perform this analysis you need to collect and compare information on the old machine versus a new one. Factors to be considered include: Price of new vs. resale value of old. Projected loss of value in the next year from use and depreciation. Operating costs per hour, based on the projected life cycle (or hours of use). Other factors, such as projected repairs and down time. | DIRT PAIL AUGUST 16, 2011 Where Have I Been?!?!
