Isn’t it beautiful? Several commentators noted that the Chinese tradesmen didn’t handle the details too well, noting unequal gaps, broken edges and cracks. Though I don’t consider that a damning criticism, since a project of this complexity must have areas where everything didn’t quite work. I’d love to see it myself to evaluate the construction quality. These four photos only give a brief sense of the opera house. Lots of sour graping and whining going on. | CONSTRUCTION MARKETING IDEAS JULY 20, 2011 Frugal construction marketing = do it yourself (wisely) The average person doesn’t succeed very often at carpentry, architecture, pipe-fitting or structural design. Image from diyfail.com. We all know of the sad failures when unqualified individuals try to do our work. We also know the disasters that await when a homeowner sets out to be the general contractor for a renovation project. This is hardly frugal. | | | | | | | CONSTRUCTONOMICS DECEMBER 1, 2009 $10 million Green Roof, photovoltaic, and air handling unit. Large Format Digital Printing Suzanne Z says on: 15 December 2009 at 9:40 am Hello John, If you are looking for support in the design/project management realm, my background is in architecture with a focus on green building. My company’s provides carpentry, labor, supplies. These renovations will be performed on two federal buildings in Philadelphia. Thanks, Bruce. | GREEN GODDESS OCTOBER 2, 2011 Living Green The firm of CEI Architecture clearly collaborated with the University system to pursue both purpose and function yet permitting design and thoughtfulness often ignored in what are public buildings. To live green is well a challenge. That is the whole reason the Living Green Challenge came to be. Easier said and yes yes easily done. Canada seemingly makes it more so as in this project. | GREEN GODDESS JULY 28, 2011 Old is New Again Amy Harrington McAuley, who owns Oculus Fine Carpentry in Portland, Ore., We’re just trying to spread the word, so people can make good choices,” said Rebecca Harris, a program officer at the trust, who pointed out that installing new windows in old homes, whose original windows often have unusual shapes, can distort the overall architectural design. For me, it’s aesthetics,” Ms. | CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE DECEMBER 4, 2010 City of the Future « Construction Knowledge came across this winner of a CGSociety digital art competition for architecture and thought you’d enjoy it as well. As things change, as the future becomes the present, are you positioning yourself to be near the action? Hockey great Wayne Gretzky said, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be. He also said, “The only way a kid is going to practice is if it’s total fun for him… and it was for me. Figure a way to love what you do, to want to get better, to excel. | | | | | | | | | -
CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2011 Living Large in 500 sf Apartment « Construction Knowledge The design by Jordan Pamass Digital Architecture won the American Institute of Architects 2010 award for small projects. The photos below are from a 500 sf apartment in the East Village NYC. The design details are beautiful, creating many functional spaces in a tiny apartment. The isometric layout gives you a sense of the long, narrow space, so you can better appreciate the other detailed photos. The bedroom nook just feels like a place I’d like to retreat to at the end of the day. The living room, though small, still provides a nice community vibe. MORE >> -
CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2011 The Government Should Lease Buildings We designed the buildings for high energy efficiency and low operating costs and tied those costs into the lease. Even with paying state prevailing wages, we offered tremendous savings to school districts. We set up Privatization Services Inc. and signed our first project for the Warwick Elementary School. We were less than 2/3 the costs of the traditional delivery method. The cost savings came from intensely managing the land procurement, design and construction processes. We thought the unions had been appeased by our agreement to pay PA Prevailing Wages. What a waste! MORE >> -
CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2011 Splendid Savannah The varied architecture is beautiful and the Spanish moss draped trees adds to the charm (as does TBW). While these brick details provide a sense of the rich architectural variety. As we drove south on Rt 95, we decided to have a walk around in Savannah, GA. The world famous urban plan used in Savannah makes for delightful strolls. Native American Tomochichi and British General Oglethorpe founded and laid out the city in the 1730s. The over 20 squares make the plan so innovative. This photo of the first square we entered gives a feel. As does this functional yet funky entrance. MORE >> -
