Today I read an ENR article about a $1.1 Billion Utah highway and bridge project that illustrated one of the problems with public design-build: sore losers and their ability to litigate. The Utah DOT made a request for proposal for upgrading a 24 mile highway section near Provo. The design-build finalists were each paid $1.5 Million to prepare their designs and proposals that were judged on budget, highest value, schedule, design and public inconvenience. | CONSTRUCTION LAW MUSINGS OCTOBER 31, 2011 Monitor Yourself to Avoid Construction Risk Site contractors should not be trying to do masonry and drywall folks shouldn’t do asbestos abatement. Without an expertise in a particular construction trade, a contractor in Virginia (or anywhere else for that matter) will have a tough time accurately bidding the work (more on this later) and 2. I’ve found that to be true. In fact, my business succeeds because of that truth. Read Ted’s blog post, it’s worth a few minutes of your time. As I read his post, I wondered what else Ted Garrison does. was pleasantly surprised to find a series of podcasts that address construction issues. This seems a good resource for anyone looking to learn, grow and advance in the construction industry. | CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE OCTOBER 8, 2010 Trans-Hudson Tunnel: The Sorry State of Budgeting The bidding market couldn’t be more competitive. It’s time to scrap the design-bid approach to public projects. Billion Trans-Hudson Tunnel project. The tunnel would have doubled commuter train capacity from NJ to Manhattan. The New Jersey Transit, the Port Authority and the Federal Transportation Authority all worked together to agree on the $8.7 Billion budget, as reported by ENR. Rumors of likely cost overruns inspired Gov Christie to stop work on 9/10/10 on the early stages of the project. How can our industry be so poor at projecting project costs? Any thoughts? | CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE JANUARY 5, 2011 Questions Your Contractor Shouldn't Ask My favorite question was, “Can I see the other bids before I give you mine? As you’d imagine, the best gave incredible service and the worst took the money and didn’t do the work. The section that amused me, though, was Questions Your Contractor Should Never Ask. Apparently, asking, “Will you be alone when I arrive? or “Are you a widow? aren’t considered appropriate. I must admit, I’ve often wanted to ask that question. Here’s the video. CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2011 A Question from China: US Firms Providing Structural Engineering. firms working on major projects (such as the Olympic bids), but I can find very little about lesser projects. Filed under: Design — Tags: structural engineering in China — nedpelger Dear Ned, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to organize your blog. I have very much enjoyed the posts. If you have a moment, I am currently trying to do research on the activities of American firms in China, particularly relating to structural engineering consulting done (mostly in the design phase) by U.S. firms for Chinese companies in first and in second tier Chinese cities. CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | SATURDAY, JANUARY 15, 2011 Now That's Customer Service If you are just another bid on the page, you’ve got an uphill trudge. love to see great customer service and strive to provide it. Great customer service in construction means your clients don’t want to work with anyone but you. On the other hand, poor customer service infuriates me. I’m not sure why it so annoys me (not much does), but terrible customer service pushes my aggravation buttons. It’s such a terrible business practice and so unnecessary. I’ve long believed if you receive great customer service, you might tell a friend or two. MORE >> -
CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | MONDAY, JANUARY 31, 2011 NC Bridge Project a 50% Off Sale What does a bid like this tell us about our industry? The construction bid market is amazingly competitive these days. The Winston-Salem Journal noted that the I-85 Yadkin River Bridge project covers about 4 miles of road and the bridge widening. Perhaps a few things: Design engineers and architects are often terrible at budgeting construction costs. Balfour Beatty really hammers down the estimates. remember when Balfour Beatty beat GA &FC Wagman (a part of the company I was working for at the time) on the Lancaster Rt 30 road and bridge project. CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2011 Innovation in Contracting Public bids go to the lowest cost bidder (regardless of their reputation or ability to get the job done well…other than requiring a bonding company to vouch for them). Private bids generally also focus on the lowest cost, though most of us limit our invited bid list. You have over 1 Billion people to identify (let’s call them Indians). How do you set up a system that gathers and tracks identity data? citizens. Since hundreds of millions lack documents, addresses or even surnames, the project seems even trickier.
