TEMPEST BLOG | WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 2012 Design Intent ConstructionI have heard many complaints from design teams about estimators over the years. . From “it shouldn’t cost that much” to “you killed the project”. One of the best was when I was told that I could only offer VE items as long as they did not “interfere with the intent of the design ”. Any VE item “interferes” with the design when you get down to it. From choosing a more cost effective HVAC system or a more suitable glazing system, the intent is changed. It sounds to me that what the design team is really saying is “it doesn’t matter to us how much it costs”. -

MARKUP AND PROFIT | TUESDAY, MAY 15, 2012 Another Cost Plus Disaster construction company can’t operate on an 18% overhead and profit margin. A very nice gentleman called me last Friday. He related a story about his home remodeling project. It was done a Cost Plus job, the “plus” was negotiated at 18%. The original estimate from his contractor to do a large, miscellaneous interior remodeling job was $87,000, and it would be done in three months or less. It was Cost Plus because the contractor told him that was the safest way to do contracts. Gasoline as a job cost? It’s the second week in May. Period, end of conversation. -

CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEGE | MONDAY, MAY 7, 2012 Construction Unemployment Rate Falls, But 2,000 Jobs Lost So how can the Construction unemployment rate for April 2012 fall to 14.5% (from 17.2% As ENR reported, the laid off construction workers find jobs outside the construction industry. In fact, though the unemployment rate has steadily dropped, the construction industry employs less workers than in April 2010. That’s normally a harbinger of good news for construction. As I’ve been writing for over a year, if Europe doesn’t melt down, we should be on our way to a reasonable recovery in construction. We certainly see it here. -
