TRAIN4TRADESKILLS FEBRUARY 8, 2012 Construction Engineering Workers on Demand The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has revealed a survey today showing engineering and construction professionals have become the most sought workers in the UK. Overall, the survey, which is co-produced by KPMG, showed that companies are spending more on hiring permanent employees as opposed to part-time employment. However, the highest increase in hiring full-time employees has been in the construction engineering sector which hired more people due to recent infrastructure projects and the substantial government investment into such projects. | CONSTRUCTION LAW MONITOR FEBRUARY 8, 2012 Contractor Websites In the course of staying on the pulse of the construction industry I read numerous articles online, using things like twitter , Google Reader and other forms of social media. Recently, I discovered a website from Darren Slaughter , he designs websites just for contractors! Many contractors have lackluster sites that all but drive away potential clients, and there are still some who do not even have a site. Its rare to come across an individual who designs sites specifically for contractors. found Slaughter because he wrote an informative piece on Google+ for contractors and it has good content. | SCAFFMAG FEBRUARY 8, 2012 New Scaffolding Association Launches There is a new firm in town that goes by the name the ‘Scaffolding Association’ which could well be a viable alternative to the NASC (National Access and Scaffolding Confederation). Over the last few weeks I've had a number of conversations with representatives of institutional owners who have expressed an interest in BIM, especially as a tool for managing the planning, design and construction process in a way that will arm owners with a digital asset that can be leveraged to increase efficiency in operations and maintenance. CONSTRUCTION LAW MONITOR | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2012 California Contractors Need Workers Compensation Insurance, or else… One of my favorite places to find good content and expert opinion regarding construction and legal issues is JDSupra.com. This is a service whereby bloggers and others can post content and it is marketed by JDSupra. In one of JD’s tweets last week I discovered a very informative article by Matthew Hicks regarding Workers’ Compensation Insurance law and jurisprudence in California. Hicks sites two landmark cases, Wright v. Isaak, 149 Cal.App.4th 1116 (2007) and Loranger v. Jones , 184 Cal.App.4th 847 (2010). See Hicks article for the in depth analysis of these cases. MORE >> -
CONSTRUCTION LAW MUSINGS | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2012 A Cloud on the Horizon for Mechanic’s Lien Claimants in Virginia? Image via Wikipedia. As any of you that read this construction law blog realize, the Virginia mechanic’s lien statute is near and dear to my heart. Because of the already picky and statute driven nature of these powerful but detail oriented tools of collection, any change to the statute must be considered for its practical effect on the Virginia construction industry. HB 1265 , introduced and out of committee for consideration during the 2012 Virginia General Assembly session, is just such a potential change. My thoughts? As always, these are just my opinions. What to you think? MORE >> -
