In March of 2006 the National Building Information Model Standards (NBIMS) Project Committee adopted the following definition of BIM: * A Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such it serves a shared knowledge resources for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from its inception onward. The National Building Information Model Standard (NBIMS) Project Committee was tasked, in its charter, with improving the performance of facilities over their full life-cycle by fostering a common, standard and integrated life-cycle information model for the Architectural, Engineering, Construction and Facilities Management professions.
