From NY Times | Making History In a Brooklyn Neighborhood When Habitat for Humanity New York City consulted an architecture firm on its new site in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville, Brooklyn , it received a response that switched on a light bulb. The result, nearly three years and one entirely new development model later, is the largest creation in Habitat’s history, an $11.6 And the city’s branch of Habitat just learned last week that it will receive about $10.5 | GREEN GODDESS JUNE 7, 2011 This Land Is Your Land The farmer's markets that populate a city during the season are expanding but the vendors are not. Our suburban sprawl thanks to the unreal costs of housing in urban centers and the building boom has removed much farm able land that once was adjacent to our cities. reprint an Article from the American Prospect on the declining availability of land for our new urban farmers. | | | | | | | GREEN GODDESS MAY 23, 2011 Proposition B I found an interesting article via Reuters about a new concept in Business called a "B Corp." In response to the seemingly unrelentless drive the free market economy and conventional capitalism has caused to the global economy - particularly in the United States which unlike its other Western European and Asian counterparts saw the top 1% income rise over 40%. Interesting, no? | GREEN GODDESS APRIL 11, 2011 The Grapes of Wrath As we hear the destruction of many of our once urban hubs - Detroit, Cleveland come to mind - we believe that the entire cities are now destitute and those who live there either too poor or too stupid to leave. Much of this is of course racial with Detroit being America's most segregated city. Between 2000 and 2009, six of them lost population – led, not surprisingly, by New Orleans. | GREEN GODDESS APRIL 1, 2011 Jobs or Just McJobs New York City (including the outer boroughs)gained only 127,000 in residents since the last Census. If there is ever a city that demonstrates the current two tier economy its this one. Cities for the rich and those who are too poor to leave and work in service jobs and others moving further away to areas they can manage to find work and manage to live above water. | GREEN GODDESS AUGUST 31, 2009 Tales of Three Cities/Bears/Men Last week, in his first extended visit to New York in eight years, he said the $741 in his pocket was all the money he had in the world. He is one of the 10 most important people in the history of the Internet,” said Jason Calacanis, an entrepreneur of digital media who once chronicled New York’s tech scene in his publication, The Silicon Alley Reporter. His bunker, stocked with guns, was raided by city authorities on Jan. Since his return, Mr. Harris has been trying to start a venture called The Wired City. Part of me has almost become immune. 1, 2000. | | | | | | | | | -
GREEN GODDESS | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2009 Its the Infrastructure This morning on the way to a gig I was listening to BBC America's discussion on New York City and the next phase of where it was going as a city. When America was its infancy the growth of this city was largely fueled by the need to build a better hub and city of "greatness" for the future, one with a mix of financial services and small industry. The city grew and is truly symbiotic as a one of the greatest cities in the world. But its time for a new act for this great city. This is a prescription that is for any city. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009 The Struggle Continues found two articles in the New York Times today - one about the aging workforce another an editorial about the role of women in the workplace. The median income for those 65 and over was just $18,208 in 2008 — a quarter of them had incomes under $11,139, according to Patrick Purcell, an expert on older workers and pensions with the Congressional Research Service. As a freshman, I had an interview for a magazine internship in New York City. My career was recently summed up in a New York magazine article as leggy. million in 2001. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010 The Politics of Hate In fact, according to the 2010 report from the trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds, Social Security is estimated to pay out full benefits "by redeeming trust fund assets until reserves are exhausted in 2037, at which point tax income would be sufficient to pay about 75 percent of scheduled benefits through 2084." 16th Amendment The 16th Amendment allows Congress to collect income taxes. That's the income tax. Many also pay state or local taxes on sales, income and property For some reason the "politics as usual" just isn't cutting it here. MORE >>
