In general, people want to do a good job and take pride in the work they do. Telling them how the job is progressing is another way of saying they are doing a good job which can actually make them work harder. If a person is going to milk the job, they will milk the job no matter what. It’s really no different than the old story of the boy crying wolf. | MARKUP AND PROFIT SEPTEMBER 16, 2010 Cutting Labor Rates Sep 16 Cutting Labor Rates Tweet A buddy of mine from the east coast called the other day. He lamented that he’s run into pricing issues on more jobs today than he has in several years. But there is a lot of flap in the media and other places that lead our potential clients to believe they can badger contractors about price and the contractors will cut their prices to get the job. Go back through at least a dozen jobs that you quoted and did not get. If at all possible, find out what those jobs sold for. careful with labor cost. Next, check your field labor ratio. This number is your Field Labor Wages divided by your Invoiced Sales. If you’re comparing it to your budget, just include wage costs – not the costs of labor burden (payroll taxes, safety insurance, etc.). FIELD LABOR WAGES / INVOICED SALES. MATERIAL COSTS / INVOICED SALES. | CONSTRUCTION LAW MONITOR APRIL 18, 2011 Why An US Department Of Labor Investigation Can Ruin Your Year At the same time, federal budget challenges and extra funding from the Obama Administration put more eyes at the US Department of Labor on prevailing wage violations. The first thing you’ll learn about a US Department of Labor Prevailing Wage investigation is that it is confidential. The Department of Labor typically begins an investigation into a company or project after receiving a complaint. Then, the department will request you provide wage documentation and certified payroll, and will begin to interview laborers on the project. Rodriquez, C. Really unfair. | BUILDERS COUNSEL MAY 16, 2012 E-Verify Is Not Ready, So The Legal Workforce Act Should Wait. Right now, federal contractors are required to use the system to verify workers on federal contracts – this includes Washington state federal jobs. Furthermore, close to 1% of workers are said to be unauthorized when they are actually authorized, leading them into a bureaucratic mess to fix the problem and get them back on the job. Not ready? Then wait. No rush. Verify? Yowza! | CONSTRUCTUBE MARCH 30, 2011 Labor of love Home | Construction News | Labor of love Labor of love 03/30/2011 03:24:00 pm Abby BeMent - Construction News, Ltd. MARKUP AND PROFIT | THURSDAY, JULY 8, 2010 Surprises on a Construction Job Jul 8 Surprises on a Construction Job Tweet A homeowner posted a comment recently on ServiceMagic’s forum. He said he’d been told by many people to add $3 to $5 K to a substantial job just to cover the extras that seem to come up. The first is a contractor who underprices a job to make the sale. The other reason extras come up is when an estimator doesn’t do their job completely. As an estimator, you have the responsibility to take the job apart mentally so you know exactly what is going on. Our jobs aren’t under priced but, right priced. MORE >> -

WELD MY WORLD | SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2011 Southwest Louisiana in Need of Welders More and more people are finally beginning to understand what those who have worked as skilled labor have known for years: the number of new skilled laborers is declining. For years, high school students have been told to pursue college degrees in fields such as business and accounting and steered away from careers in skilled labor. In reality, many skilled laborers, such as welders, actually make more money per year than those who have four-year college degrees – and they don't have the huge student loans that often go with those degrees.
