From NY Times | Making History In a Brooklyn Neighborhood When Habitat for Humanity New York City consulted an architecture firm on its new site in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville, Brooklyn , it received a response that switched on a light bulb. The result, nearly three years and one entirely new development model later, is the largest creation in Habitat’s history, an $11.6 And the city’s branch of Habitat just learned last week that it will receive about $10.5 | GREEN GODDESS MAY 17, 2012 Buy Your Shade of Green Maybe I am just a cynic and see shadows in corners that don't exist but this mornings Style section of the New York Times set my blood to boil. There was a profile of Graham Hill the founder of Treehugger who has a new product/project to sell. Later this month, Mr. Hsieh will try it out for himself, when he comes to New York to stay in the LifeEdited apartment. | | | | | | | GREEN GODDESS APRIL 8, 2012 Plastic Surgery Anyone? And I read yesterday about a significant project in New York slated for destruction - The Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY. This building seems to not suffer from a blight on a city scape but from construction defects that may or may not be the result of design issues. headquarters in Washington and Boston City Hall. Ahh the power of lobbying. Edward A. | GREEN GODDESS JANUARY 9, 2012 Saving Thanks for the post from Sylvester Campbell I just moved to New York City. She is going to the Parsons Fashion School ( yes the one on Project Runway), but studying fashion marketing. If you are going to live in New York, you have to be creative about saving money, that’s for sure got a great internship at Conde Naste and I am hoping that one day soon it will turn into a higher paying job. have a great little apartment with my college roommate. She isn’t a designer, although I wish that she were! We also don’t have a house phone. | GREEN GODDESS JUNE 15, 2011 Fab-tastic Today's New York Times has a great article on a Pre-fab project used for student housing. Squeezing Costs, Builders Take New Look at Prefab By RONDA KAYSEN New York Times, June 15, 2011 PHILADELPHIA — A package arrived on a shabby north Philadelphia block in January 2010, wrapped in Tyvek and measuring 55 feet long and 16 feet wide. And that is Fab-tastic! | GREEN GODDESS MAY 23, 2011 Proposition B I found an interesting article via Reuters about a new concept in Business called a "B Corp." They say a new kind of corporate legal structure is needed to require companies to operate for the good of society, not just for their shareholders. We can't have a new economy unless we have a new type of corporation," Jay told me. And third, B Corps is pushing for new laws. | | | | | | | | | -
GREEN GODDESS | MONDAY, APRIL 11, 2011 Down the Up Staircase Until you reach tenure you move schools - a lot; you will see schools turnover Principals - a lot; you will see fads and fashions in school curriculum and design - a lot; you will see Superintendents come and go (the average is 3 years)- a lot. New Boards and new Municipalities and new Government plans that change every few years also add to the mix. Add to that the chaos of many students own lives a day in school is no day at the beach. Today I loathe most days in schools. And now they are demanding to run our schools and universities. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 2011 Jobs or Just McJobs New York City (including the outer boroughs)gained only 127,000 in residents since the last Census. GREEN GODDESS | MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 2009 Another LEED Building Bites the Dust The council’s own research suggests that a quarter of the new buildings that have been certified do not save as much energy as their designs predicted and that most do not track energy consumption once in use. The plaque should be installed with removable screws,” said Henry Gifford, an energy consultant in New York City. The LEED label, developed by the council in 1998 to have a third-party verification of a building’s environmental soundness, certifies new homes, schools and other buildings, as well as existing ones. And that is not the intent. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | MONDAY, AUGUST 31, 2009 Tales of Three Cities/Bears/Men Last week, in his first extended visit to New York in eight years, he said the $741 in his pocket was all the money he had in the world. He is one of the 10 most important people in the history of the Internet,” said Jason Calacanis, an entrepreneur of digital media who once chronicled New York’s tech scene in his publication, The Silicon Alley Reporter. His bunker, stocked with guns, was raided by city authorities on Jan. Since his return, Mr. Harris has been trying to start a venture called The Wired City. Part of me has almost become immune. 1, 2000. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2009 Its the Infrastructure This morning on the way to a gig I was listening to BBC America's discussion on New York City and the next phase of where it was going as a city. When America was its infancy the growth of this city was largely fueled by the need to build a better hub and city of "greatness" for the future, one with a mix of financial services and small industry. The city grew and is truly symbiotic as a one of the greatest cities in the world. But its time for a new act for this great city. This is a prescription that is for any city.
