And I read yesterday about a significant project in New York slated for destruction - The Orange County Government Center in Goshen, NY. This building seems to not suffer from a blight on a city scape but from construction defects that may or may not be the result of design issues. headquarters in Washington and Boston City Hall. Ahh the power of lobbying. Edward A. | | | | | | | GREEN GODDESS APRIL 11, 2011 The Grapes of Wrath As we hear the destruction of many of our once urban hubs - Detroit, Cleveland come to mind - we believe that the entire cities are now destitute and those who live there either too poor or too stupid to leave. Much of this is of course racial with Detroit being America's most segregated city. Between 2000 and 2009, six of them lost population – led, not surprisingly, by New Orleans. | GREEN GODDESS JULY 9, 2009 Stimulate This!!! Today the New York Times found that this is just the case with many projects going unfunded and others simply not making any sense in relation to dollars and jobs in many states. Not shocking given our Mayor's disengagement from the larger picture outside the City of Seattle. As for us in Seattle we still have the light rail that serves a minimal amount of the population with no parking or major stations prepared to handle it as commuter transport. More than a quarter of the money will be spent to widen roads or build new roads or bridges. | GREEN GODDESS SEPTEMBER 18, 2009 Its the Infrastructure This morning on the way to a gig I was listening to BBC America's discussion on New York City and the next phase of where it was going as a city. When America was its infancy the growth of this city was largely fueled by the need to build a better hub and city of "greatness" for the future, one with a mix of financial services and small industry. The city grew and is truly symbiotic as a one of the greatest cities in the world. But its time for a new act for this great city. This is a prescription that is for any city. | GREEN GODDESS SEPTEMBER 23, 2009 Blogs/Sites of Note News, new developments and videos help keep readers up-to-date on construction trends. GREEN GODDESS | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2009 Green Walls the new "green" I read this article today and thought "oh here we go the newest trend, green walls are the new black" (using that eponymous fashion term semingly appropriate). Like Green Roofs I like them aesthetically and principally in Cities and Urban areas where anything green is at a premium. And given our state of Education no wonder change is the new socialism. So enjoy this year's new black in the green fashioned world. Next week I am sure something new will come along. Buildings can be attractive, practical and efficient. Wow assigning levels of recognition. MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2009 Are we there yet? I went to New York City this past week to tour some green buildings, hear a lecture and celebrate my milestone birthday. learned quite a bit and will post about the buildings of note that I saw and some reflections on conversations I had about where New York goes there goes the rest of the nation which is what this post is truly about. walked to the Park at Madison Square to their Kid's Green Festival and saw amazing green products and artisans showing that even in that city of cities there is a commitment to sustainable design and life. GREEN GODDESS | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2009 Water Water Everywhere Winter is here and yes even in Seattle where rain is a natural state of things you would think we would be prepared and tolerant. We are not the only city that suffers and currently our biggest problems are with again infrastructures that cannot handle the population, the change in climate and the simple fact they are OLD. Will they make a contribution to our City Light and Water Department for the increase in capacities that building will lead to? Likely no and the City does not require such investment. New York City’s 14 wastewater treatment plants, which handle 1.3 MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 2011 We Built This City on Rock N Roll Friday, March 11, 2011 We Built This City on Rock N Roll I read an interesting review in Slate regarding a book by Edward Glaeser, Triumph of the City. have not yet read the book but from the review the author makes some interesting points which on cursory note I agree and some ideas on how to rebuild cities in this new millennial. And Glaeser seems to address these issues - affordability and accessibility - are key to a Citys survival. do think if he mentions Silicon Valley as an example of a City then on that mark he would be wrong. What Can You Do? MORE >> -
GREEN GODDESS | THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 2011 Change is Gonna Do Ya Good The only prospect for reducing air and car travel between American cities is rail. Chris Christie in New Jersey canceled plans for a much needed rail tunnel across the Hudson River. Fair enough, but that proves not that we shouldnt invest in high-speed inter- city rail but rather that we must pair it with improved mass transit within cities. more local manifestation of the reactionary worldview can be found in the opposition to New York Citys expansion of bicycle lanes. Being New York, the right wing is represented by the center-left (Sen. MORE >>
